Executive Director, Metcalf Institute

The University of Rhode Island is seeking an Executive Director for the Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting. Metcalf Institute, best known for its Annual Workshop for Journalists, has recently launched the Grantham Prize for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment, a $75,000 annual journalism award, and the Diversity Fellowships in Environmental Reporting, an NSF-funded long-term fellowship program for minority reporters.

The Executive Director position requires a Bachelor's degree, master's degree preferred. A minimum of five years of experience as a full-time mainstream journalist with a track record in covering environmental and science issues is required. Five years of research and analysis of news topics required.

The Executive Director will write proposals to generate support for all program activities and staff, and administer all projects and activities associated with Metcalf Institute. The candidate must have progressively responsible supervisory or management experience and a demonstrated ability to represent the University and Metcalf Institute with funders and journalism and science audiences.

Night City Editor, Sentinel & Enterprise

The Sentinel & Enterprise, Fitchburg, Mass., has an immediate opening for a night city editor. This position will be part content editing, part page-design. We will train the right candidate to do pages. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to make the jump from a weekly to a daily newspaper. Job responsibilities include working with the Editor to design daily and weekend pages, editing copy and improving the look of the paper. Must be committed to doing excellent work and know the AP stylebook inside and out. Photographer, The Standard Times

The Standard-Times, a mid-sized daily located in New Bedford, Mass., is looking for a staff digital photographer who can shoot quality photos for news, sports and features. Candidate should be able to complete an average of three quality assignments a day. Must handle pressure well and have the ability to change direction at a moment's notice. Good people and journalism skills, knowledge of Photoshop a must. Must be available some nights and weekends. Ability to shoot video a plus. Salary commensurate with experience. Fellowship #1:
Metcalf Institute Eighth Annual Workshop for Journalists
Costal Impacts: Marine and Environmental Science for Journalists

Dates:June 11 - June 16, 2006

Description: This intensive, hands-on, science immersion workshop gives reporters opportunities to work in the lab and field with scientists, graduate students, and policy experts. Participants will attend lectures, debates and panel sessions given by leading writers and researchers. The workshop emphasizes data analysis, research methods, and the integration of science with public policy and the local community. Fellowships are available to print, broadcast and electronic journalists who are interested in marine and environmental science reporting.

Prize:
Room, board, and tuition (transportation not included).

Fellowship #2:
Metcalf Institute Diversity Fellowships in Environmental Reporting

Dates: September 2006 (42 weeks)

Description: This 10-month fellowship will support six minority journalists to study and report on marine and environmental science. Each fellowship includes a science immersion workshop focusing on environmental justice, four weeks of independent study with mentorship at the University of Rhode Island, and 37-weeks working as reporter covering science and the environment at one of six news outlets including: Science Friday, NOVA Science Television/NOVA Online, The Providence Journal, and NPR-member station, WBUR. This fellowship is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation and includes a $28,000 stipend for each fellow. These fellowships are available to six minority journalists with U.S. citizenship who work in print, broadcast or electronic media.

Prize: Workshop tuition and a $28,000 stipend (transportation not included).
